CIMA AWARDS, THE BIGGEST BIENNIAL ART AWARDS FOR YOUNG EMERGING ARTISTS IN INDIA, IS BACK

Dates: 2 – 23 February 2019

The Centre of International Modern Art (CIMA) and the Art Heritage Foundation are back with the third edition of the CIMA Awards and CIMA Awards Show, a biennial celebration of young artistic talent from across India. The third edition will begin with the CIMA Awards on February 2, 2019, at the Oberoi Grand, Kolkata.

Twenty-two awards including the CIMA Award and two runners-up, two Jury Awards, one Special Mention, four Merit Awards and 10 special Awards will be given to artists whose work will be chosen from 160 participants. The CIMA Awards will have a two-tier jury: a preliminary jury for shortlisting, followed by a final nine-member jury for the ultimate selection of awardees in January.

The awards are meant for artists in the age range of 25 to 45, both formally trained as well as the self-taught. The winner of the CIMA Award will win a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh and a solo show at the CIMA Gallery. The CIMA Awards consists of Rs 65 lakhs of prize money, trophies, felicitations, exhibitions and publications.

The members of both the preliminary jury and the final one are individuals known for their excellence in various fields of visual arts and also from the world of academia, literature, music and cinema. The awards function will begin at 4.30pm with Nicholas Coleridge, chairman of the Victoria and Albert Museum and chairman of Condé Nast Britain, delivering the keynote address. Anjani Kumar Singh, chief adviser to the chief minister of Bihar, much lauded for setting up the Bihar Museum, Dr. Deborah Swallow, director of Courtauld Institute, UK and Pooja Sood of Khoj International Artists’ Association will be felicitated.

The works of all 160 finalists — paintings, sculptures, graphics and emerging new media such as video art, installations and digital art — will be showcased at the CIMA Award Show, across three venues in Kolkata:

The International Symposium, introduced in the last edition of CIMA Awards, will be held at the IIC premise in New Delhi, in association with Ashoka University and India International Centre (IIC), New Delhi, on February 5 and 6, 2019. The symposium is also in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur, Aga Khan Foundation and The Raza Foundation. It will see notable speakers from India and across the world, academics to artists, architects to technocrats, economists to historians, lm directors to actors, talking about “Freedom and Creativity”.

Some of the international speakers at the symposium include Nicholas Coleridge; Deborah Swallow, director of the Courtauld Institute; Wang Chunchen, director of the National Museum of China; art historian and curator Catherine David; and Patrizia Asproni, president at Industry and Culture Foundation, Italian Association of Private Enterprises for the management, enhancement and promotion of cultural heritage. Among the Indian speakers expected to participate are distinguished personalities like Shyam Benegal, Shahid Amin, Vir Sanghvi, Aparna Sen, T.N. Ninan, Rudrangshu Mukherjee, William Dalrymple and many other reputed personalities from the world of cinema, art, academia and literature.
